The outstanding work of you and your colleagues last week on our home should not go without recognition.
Confronted by a hundred year old mortise lock that had served past its prime, your folks first tried to fix it and to replace it with today’s version. Neither approach worked very well. I brought the original bronze outside knob to your shop to see if it could somehow be utilized with the replacement mechanism.
Your initial reaction was that it wouldn’t be worth the expence, but as you began to describe how much effort it would take, it became “a teachable moment” for you to explain to me (and to your work force) precisely what the differences were between the original mechanism and the modern replacement- and the amount of custom work required to mate the two.
It seemed like there were two paths: customize the new mechanism or build custom parts to restore the original lock. We settled on the latter and you and your fellow craftsmen went to work- restoring the original to “better than new” condition.
That old lock is now back in place- functioning perfectly and ready to provide another hundred years of service.
I am so grateful- and salute and thank you and your team for putting your experience and expertise to work to bring this all together.
